Error message when you open a Commerce Server 2009 Web site that is integrated into SharePoint when the SQL Server and the Commerce Server are installed on different computers: "Server Error in '/' Application" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975603 I think this might also resolve your issue and would mean that you do not need to give users permissions on the database. I think this might also resolve your issue and would mean that you do not need to give users permissions on the database.
