When Commerce server 2007 released, I am very much impressed with the starter site. This site can be reused in multiple ways.

  • Can demonstrate commerce server capabilities to our customers by showing end to end scenarios.
  • Very helpful while training business users or functional team. We can able to show how the changes done through business tools are reflected in the website.
  • Starter site comes up with code which helps us to ramp developers in commerce server.
  • With the starter site code we can develop client website very fast. I have seen many websites which run on top of starter site code.

One of the small challenge we face, whenever the client request for a demo. Generally, we used to go with our commerce server configured virtual PC and showcase the capabilities. Recently I came to know about the website where starter is publicly hosted and the url is http://www.startersitedemo.com/

If your client want to see commerce server capabilities then you can share this link with them.  Hope Microsoft hosts similar kind of site for commerce server 2009 (with MOSS front end).

Last month, Microsoft has released new virtual PC with all configured software required to run commerce server 2009. This VPC has Commerce Server 2009 , Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server 2007 (MOSS)  & SQL Server,  fully installed and configured.  You can download it from Microsoft connect website.

Note: The software will expire in every 3 months and new VPC is updated in connect website. If you want to use the downloaded VPC then you have to update the software license with your license. For more details, you can check readme.txt file.

We may be technical sound and a certification in that technology can endorse our technical capability. Microsoft learning team has released many certifications and it will bring good credibility within the project/company/client. With more adoption of virtual teams culture, using different methodologies in a particular project and trying to execute the project with less cost and fast delivery, clients teams are very much interested to take people who are technically good and they are using certification as one of the criteria to evaluate the resource or team.

For commerce server technology, unfortunately we don’t have any certification and I feel Microsoft doesn’t have any plans to offer this certification in near future. So, what can be our alternative. Since ecommerce is linked with different technologies, we can get certified in those technologies. Some of them can be

MCPD – Enterprise Applications (ASP.NET, Windows Application)
MOSS/WSS Application Development
BizTalk Server 2006

Since commerce server has very little client base, I doubt Microsoft server group will release CS certification in near future. Hope they will come up with certification from Commerce server 7.
